After years of honing my photographic skills and gathering a collection of photographic equipment on my quest to become a better photographer, I started to lose sight of why I enjoyed photography so much.
I actually spent more time on social media watching photographers slog it out verbally over who's pictures are better than who's and I seemed more concerned about buying gear and upgrading it then going out and taking pictures.
After much soul searching I decided to do something about this photographic lull and combine photography with video.
I already had a YouTube channel with a few videos scattered over the years and decided to pick up where I left off making random photography videos including my 'My Gear' 'Unboxings' and 'Tutorials'.
Making these videos I found was extremely hard, I had to learn a whole new digital world which for me was fantastic, it got my mind thinking again which included focusing on my photography by combining the two.
I wanted to broaden my video horizons and decided to venture into the scary realms of vlogging to share my thoughts and feelings when out and about with my camera.

Even though I was scared to death of walking around filming my self in amongst 100's of passers-by I just rolled with it.
My first venture was to Brighton which is the video above called 'The Lazy Photographer Misses Sunrise' and the message I wanted to portray in this video was not everyone can get up for sunrise.
We always see those amazing shots of sunrises over amazing landscapes or seascapes and just look in awe and wonder how these photographers get these amazing pictures.
Well to be honest it's not rocket science it just takes a bit of effort and commitment, some of these photographers get up daily at silly o'clock going back time and time again until the light is right, sometimes travelling massive distances to amazing locations.
Now as a normal person with a normal job working extreme shifts and getting older I find it really really hard getting up at 3am, especially more than once, so this this video is to show you that you can get good shots anytime you just need to get out with your camera.
Many times I would just sit there thinking its not worth going out as the light looks crap, but in reality I was missing out, by staying in I wasn't enjoying my hobby and blaming it on Mojo.

Now the weather wasn't great on this day but that was the whole point, going out searching for pictures in non-ideal conditions during normal daylight hours, not comparing myself to other photographers work but creating my own.
Starting off at Brighton's west Pier there where benefits to photographing during the day and one was the freedom of not having to use a tripod, something I wouldn't dream of before as I used my tripod 95% of the time.
Using a tripod can be great for creativity but also you can be creative without one so in this instance I leaned balance is the key and not to stick to one format all of the time.

Filming myself whilst doing photography was a massive learning curve but this process forced me to go out with my camera and take some pictures and I actually came away with some pretty cool shots, so I hope this message/video can help you if your Mojo has dwindled.
One is the content
One is the equipment you use.
This blog is about some of the equipment, in particular microphones and not just any microphones, yes lavalier microphones.
The audio of your videos is so important in fact just as important as the visuals and it is consistently overlooked.
I decided to put in the effort and improve my audio quality and one way was the microphone I was using.
First I started using very cheap lav mics, probably around £5-£10 for a pack of 5 which was great value and it certainly did the job and improved the audio tremendously.

After a while of using very cheap microphones once again the urge to step things up was needed so I turned to YouTube to research my needs, I wanted something that was around £20 and a step up in audio quality.

YouTube gave me a choice of the Sony ECM-CS3 and the JK044 two very capable microphones and in my price range.

A decision had to be made and after much deliberation I opted for the Sony ECM.

The one thing that swayed me was that the Sony was stereo and the JK 044 was mono which meant if I chose the JK 044 I would have to take the audio into software and create another channel otherwise the audio would only come through one ear and even though this isn't hard its still annoying and time consuming.

Decision made, Sony purchased and a happy YouTuber was born, until a problem arose.

I started filming outside and with outside audio you really need a deadcat better known as a windshield.

If you don't use a deadcat the microphone will pick up all the wind noise ruining your audio to the point of making your video unusable.

So what's the problem?

Why not just buy a deadcat ?

Well I tried but the Sony ECM is a peculiar shape and after looking and looking I could not find a deadcat for this mic, I even bought improvised deadcat's and cut them up and tried sticking them together to make my own Frankenstein windshield but they just fell off, I even tweeted Sony asking them if they made one but they didn't reply, great customer service Sony (NOT).

Defeated and frustrated I decided to look around again for another lav mic that I could use a deadcat with.

After much research again I came across the JK 004, I almost skipped past this mic as I thought it was exactly the same as my previous searches but the model number was slightly different the new one was 004 and not 044.

So what was the difference, well would you Adam and Eve it the new version was not only stereo but specifically designed for audio recorders like the Tascam DR-05 which was the very model I use for my audio.

I quickly put the JK 004 in my Amazon basket then waited for this modern miracle to drop onto my door mat.

Once unwrapped and plugged into my Tascam audio recorder I was like a kid in a candy store watching both the left and right channels jumping up and down quicker than a toilet seat in a curry house.

I am very impressed with the JK 004 which is not only stereo but is very very small and takes a deadcat all for the measly sum of £22 so great value as well, I would even go to say the audio quality is better than my Sony.

Below is a video I made doing a little comparison

Step forward man's best friend, well my best friend and faithful companion Max our Border Collie.
Not only an amazing dog but a bit of a poser which was great for me and my camera.

I wanted to test out High Speed Sync again using my Godox Xpro trigger and Godox TT600 flashguns so headed down the beach with the sun still in the sky, a situation I wouldn't normally contemplate with normal flashguns.

I set up 2x TT600's on a tri hot shoe attached to my Manfrotto Befree tripod this allowed me the option of adding a third if needed. In this situation 2 was plenty as I didn't use modifiers but relying on a bare flash situation for maximum light output.
Also I wanted to keep weight to a minimum as it wasn't very easy getting Max into the exact spot I wanted and keeping him still for too long, he was full of energy and wanted to bound about amongst the pebbles of Eastbourne Beach.
Having 2 flashguns on one hotshoe also widened the flash beam radius which I needed as I was working mainly with ultra wide angle a Tamron 15-30 and also ultra close for that quirky effect.

The sun was setting behind Max but was still in the frame which gave me a perfect opportunity to test my High Speed Sync, I was running shutter speeds between 1/1000 and 1/2500 sec with amazing results, I also had the leeway of going anywhere up to 1/8000 sec if needed.

I had the aperture wide open at f/2.8 which is normally only possible with neutral density filters, but oh boy not today, with HSS I opened up that aperture and boosted that shutter speed as far as I wanted it which was a great feeling.

I think the flashguns where set to around 1/8 power but if I had only one flashgun and used modifiers I might have started to struggle to get a good exposure even at 1/1 power but I will have to test this further to see what these modern day marvels are capable of but for now I'll let the results speak for themselves in my video below, so check it out.

I purchased a Godox Xpro trigger and a Godox TT600 flashgun, then my wife bought me 2 more Godox TT600 flashguns for my birthday and all of these bad boys are capable of high speed sync up to 1/8000 sec.

To think all together, a trigger and 3 flashguns for a grand total of £228 squids which is still cheaper than a single branded flashgun from certain manufacturers which is totally crazy.
Before I move on I have to thank Yongnuo ,another cheap brand of flashgun manufacturer which allowed me on the cheap to operate multiple off camera flashguns from the safety of my cameras hotshoe and the only reason I have left them behind is that Godox has allowed me access to HSS on the cheap.
I own the Yonguo rf602 trigger, 560 trigger and the 560II, 560III and 560IV flashguns which sit in my mighty thinktank airport roller bag just in case I ever need to call on their assistance again.

So to the future, first thing is first I needed to test my new Godox family to see if High Speed Sync actually worked, ( Below is video of me testing everything) or click here Click Me

I tested everything in my back garden on a bright sunny day with direct sunlight hitting the object I was photographing and to push the boundaries I added water splash or in this case, fresh orange juice splash to add some colour and to match the beauty product I was photographing.
Normally photographers use HSS for wide open portraiture on a sunny day so they can blow out the backgrounds but with my test I wanted to take it up a notch with water splash, which I had to do when it gets dark so I can use a long exposure and capture the water droplets using rear curtain sync and firing the flash in a pitch black room, this means I can't see what's going on and its pure luck when to press the shutter.
Now I have the power to do this type of photography during the day, proven by my new YouTube video.
One thing I learned from my test is the flashguns I have where limited by their power which once again comes down to money, if you want more power you have to pay more dollar, but now I have stepped into the basic realm of Godox I can upgrade anytime I want and the new gear will work with the new Godox Xpro trigger. Xpro Unboxing video
Thanks to cheriglowcosmetics who allowed me to use their product for the test and in my video, check them out on the link provided.
In my video below I show you my quick set up for the test and me editing the pictures in Photoshop, so make sure you check that out as well.
I have to say I'm in love with High Speed Sync and if you love off camera flash and want to try HSS this is a great entry level set up and I highly recommend it.
For the last few years I have been using Yongnuo manual flashguns and triggers, starting off with Yongnuo 560II's then 560III's and finally the 560IV's and for triggers I used the Yongnuo rf602's and finally the Yongnuo 560TX.

I have to say the Yongnuo brand was flippin awesome for the price, offering entry level specs for budding amateurs and providing features normally saved for togs with loads of dosh.

The Yongnuo 560IV is cheap manual flashgun offering basic features including zoom, power from 1/1 to 1/128 with wireless receiver built in, this brings me to amazing Yongnuo 560TX trigger which allowed me to control the 560IV's from the hotshoe of my camera.

The 560TX allowed me to change the zoom and power of several flashguns which is a god send and a feature normally saved for high end products.
The flashguns and triggers are probably around £40-£50 each so a trigger and 3 flashguns could be had for a mind blowing low sum of £200 squids and for poor togs this is a great entry level way to access off camera flash.

Now technology has moved on and as a warm blooded male I need to up my arsenal to better and bolder things, Bring on HSS (High Speed Sync) which has been around for a while and once again only people who paid a premium had access to this wonderful star trek type technology, enabling the owner to open their aperture on a bright sunny day and still use off camera flash at shutter speeds up to 1/8000 sec.

Thanks to Godox a company who has photographers like me in mind at the lower end of the market, have produced a similar product to Yongnuo but have taken the next step in the flashgun evolution by being innovative and fresh.

Godox have produced a new trigger called the Xpro which is full of amazing features that you only see in high end photography products, this includes HSS, I had to have one so paid the measly £60 and had it next day thanks to Amazon Prime.

Now I have my trigger I needed flashguns and once again as a photographer with little dollar I had to find a cheap flashgun that also had HSS, once again Godox to the rescue, I am now the proud owner of 3 Godox TT600 flashguns, these flashguns are manual which is how I roll but with the added feature of that elusive HSS which I have been pining over for the last few years.

The beauty of Their Godox Xpro trigger is it is TTL so if I ever upgrade to TTL flashes or strobes I'm all set up and future proofed.
The Xpro was £60 and the TT600's £56 so altogether it cost £228 which sounds a lot but not in comparison as you can spend this and much more just on one flashgun and now I have access to HSS,

Like most photographers I'm always looking for new and exciting ideas to test my skills and push the boundaries of my creative mindset.
Like most photographers I go through stages of not knowing what to shoot and end up not getting my camera out at all and feeling down due to a creative lull.
The picture above was taken in August 2015 and was an experiment from one of those creative highs.
Sometimes those experimental shots which you've never done before can be one of your more successful and polished shots which goes to show just try, try and try again.
This picture which I named 'Two Disciples Of Water' due to the two glasses on the right looking like the figures of people leaning towards the third glass which looks like a wave of water gave me a feeling they where in search of water, quite a vision from a picture, perhaps you can see that as well, or maybe not, what do you see ?
Not only has this picture won me a few small prizes but it also made 'Photo Of The Day' on Fstoppers click me which is no easy feat so obviously I felt ecstatic on such a nice achievement.

The reason for this blog post on a picture I took over 2 years ago is that I have loads of people ask me how I created this shot and as I am now trying to make YouTube videos on photography I thought I would put together a video on how I created this shot and share my secret with anyone who wants to try it for themselves.

So if you love photography, if you love creative photography make sure you check out my video which shows you the cheap gear and equipment I used to put this shot together.
If you do try it for yourself, post a link to your results in the comments section and I will share some of them on my twitter feed.
Also if you check out my Flickr or my 500px and you see any pictures you like and want to know how I took them, let me know in the comments and I will try and put together a how to video for you.
I am a big fan of props in photography, I can take a prop and let my imagination run riot with ideas I want to put in front of my camera, I always try to be original where possible which inst easy in a hobby that has literally millions or probably billions of pictures taken daily.
Anyway we started to redecorate our bedroom which involved throwing away our old bedroom furniture, well with me being involved in the process I didn't throw it all away instantly because I had my photographic head on, analysing everything that I could to include into a photo.
Normally props are quite small but on this occasion I went big, I just had to do something with our chest of drawers and yes it had to be spooky and scary so we took it to our local park with a creative idea in mind.

Just getting the chest of drawers to the park was a feat as there was three of us in our small family car but I managed to squeeze everything in including my camera gear.
This picture was taken around midday in the middle of August so I was worried about how to light everything due to how bright it was and I needed a dark eerie dramatic shot.
As I took the picture in a forest area the tree coverage blocked out most of the light which was another problem solved.
I had 3 choices of lighting

Natural Light / Exposing for the background then exposing for the chest of drawers and combining them in Photoshop, great for photographers with no alternative lighting.

Continuous Lighting / Use a light source such as an LED panel so you expose for the background then setting the correct light exposure with the LED panel so everything is lit for one exposure.

Off Camera Flash / This was my choice for this occasion as the lighting was fine for me to be within my cameras sync speed, I was worried it was going to be so bright that I would have had to use a super high shutter speed or a very small aperture making my flashgun useless, I was ok to use my flashgun on this occasion which also gives a nice crisp light which in turn gives a nice sharp image.

Once everything is setup and in position make sure you take a base image with nothing in the shot apart from the chest of drawers, this will be the main image used when you add the hands.
To create the effect of the hands coming out of the drawers all I had to do was take the bottoms out of the drawers, (this was all done at home beforehand) then I could place my hand through the drawers from underneath, take loads of pictures like this then you combine the ones you want using layers in Photoshop.

Check my video at the bottom to see how to do everything and also how to combine the final images in Photoshop.

In reality this was a very simple shot to do, the hardest parts was setting everything up (getting chest of drawers from the car into forest and back into car) and the embarrassment of taking the shots in a local park with kids, families and dog walkers passing by having a justified nosey look lol.
Not the sort of thing you normally see in the park in the middle of August :-)

One piece of advice I will give is to take your time, due to nerves and embarrassment I rushed a bit getting into a bit of state with little things going wrong, like my microphone coming out of my Tascam dr-05 audio recorder (luckily I doubled up and was recording audio on camera with my Rode Videomic Pro R) otherwise the whole video would have been ruined, the chest of drawers kept falling apart lol which stressed me and I forgot my gaffa tape, I was not well for three weeks so the chest of drawers was left in the garden in all weathers so got weaker and weaker, plus it was cheap crap, we upgraded to Ikea this time, much much better, not sure if our Ikea one would have the same spooky effect as the cheap ones though, so kudos to the cheap crap on this occasion.

The picture was taken by the very talented photographer Benjamin Von Wong, I didn't want to copy and paste his picture due to copyright so instead I will link Benjamin's blog page below
http://blog.vonwong.com/uv/
The picture that grabbed me was not on the blog page itself but in Benjamin's video on the page so make sure you check it out.
So what was the magical mastery that created this amazing light well it was UV light.
Now this was something I had to try.
But after going to the back of my mind and 2 years later my own UV light was sparked again after coming across UV paints on Amazon whilst looking for home craft stuff for my homeschooled daughter.
I ordered a set of the UV neon paints, a UV bulb and a bulb holder with a clamp, now I only had to wait for darkness to arrive to recreate what I had seen 2 years previous.
Well when I say recreate I mean experiment and see what happened lol.
Benjamin Von Wong had professional models, professional make up artists, an army of assistants and professional specialist lights provided by Broncolor, in comparison my little light bulb and £10 paints was an uphill struggle to get any promising results at all.
Still photography is all about experimentation and fun so with the help of my very understanding wife/assistant we ploughed ahead to see what results we could get.

Here is a short and fun video of us putting our UV photography shot together

My video was filmed on my Nikon D750 with Tamron 24-70 so I used my NIkon D7100 with Nikon 85mm f/1.8 to take some stills at the same time of filming, My Nikon D7100 was directly below my Nikon D750.
Because I was lit with only the light from the UV bulb, all other lights where turned off and it was night time I had to play around with my camera settings to get a fast enough shutter speed.
This is also the reason I used a lens with a fast aperture.

My Settings where
ISO 1600 - f/2.2 - 1/30 sec

My camera was on a tripod so I just had to hold as still as possible for the stills shots.
In the video will see a few of the still shots as well.

So overall it was fun with some very cool results and all for around £20 which shows you don't have to be Benjamin Von Wong with a big budget, its all about giving it a go ,get inspired and go and try.
There is a link on the video page in YouTube to the items I used as well just in case you want to give it a go.
Just make sure you don't stare at the Bulb as it may cause damage to your eyes.
The reason I chose this topic for my latest video is I feel photographers, especially new photographers set themselves up to fail, why? because when we trawl through all the amazing images posted all over social media we first of all wonder how these breathtaking images where possible in the first place, how did these photographers manage to capture images some of us can only dream of capturing.
We then go out to try and emulate what we have just seen on our computer screens only to fail to meet the standard we went out to emulate in the first place.
But surely these photographers taking these mind blowing images just picked up their camera bag, walked out their front door saw the amazing scene, fired off a few shots, captured the image GOD would be proud of then walked back in their house for tea and cake.

Well I have news for you as I am about to blow the perfect bubble that we perceive in our minds.
When we see these perfect shots that we cant quite match up to, the photographers taking them may have been taking images for years and years, they might have the latest gear at their disposal making their photo life that bit easier, they might be a whizz at editing in Photoshop, they may live near an amazing location and go back day in day out to catch the perfect light, etc...etc...etc
This is the point I wanted to make in my video the differences between a professional photographer or pro level photographer and an amateur or hobbyist, the Pro knows his trade inside out,its his job, its his business, its what pays the bills, so a pro may be taking the same pictures day in day out whether its portraits or landscapes or any other genre his business revolves around.
In my video I just go into a bit more detail about what's involved and why we shouldn't think we are going to take the same shots, I'm not going to jump on a plane anytime soon and fly to Iceland to spend weeks photographing waterfalls and amazing skies, I'm not anytime soon going to have a big budget for a fashion shoot with loads of models and assistants.

As an amateur we are every bit good as a Professional Photographer we just have to work a bit harder to achieve similar results by thinking creatively and working with what we've got, so instead of trying to emulate exactly what you have seen on the front page of 500px use it as a guide, use it as inspiration to push your boundaries, this way you will create your own images and your own style and create inspiration for others.

Don't set yourself up to fail, set yourself up to win :-)

Like most people who start getting into recording video you may not have that really useful flippy screen on your camera, the one that flips around like a drunk gymnastic so you can see yourself when filming vlogs etc.
I found it quite stressful trying to film myself without not knowing if I was in the frame or if I was in focus or if I showed a product to the camera whether it could be seen or not.
To combat this I decided to take the plunge and bought myself an on/off camera field monitor.
After much debate, having a limited budget and checking reviews on Amazon and Google I plunged for the Feelworld FW760 7 inch Full HD monitor.
I paid around £130 for this unit which isn't the cheapest and isn't the most expensive, but for the price this monitor comes with some pretty cool and nifty features that you may only find in more expensive models.
Here is a list of the features this bad boy includes

You will probably agree looking at the list of features that this is a pretty impressive unit for the price and so far I am extremely happy with it with only a couple of little niggles I will mention in a minute.
Now as a video newbie myself I have to admit I don't yet understand a lot of these features but a couple I do understand or have learnt since buying this unit I will mention now<span style="font-family: "microsoft yahei" , sans-serif;">.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">These are just a few really amazing features which will make your
workflow much faster and easier, I know it will for me.<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Now the couple of niggles I want to mention<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">The quality of
the unit is very plasticky including the buttons which have that horrible
plastic clicky sound and feel, not a deal breaker though, for the price
its workable.<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">When attached
to my Nikon D750 the monitor emitted a whine bigger than a wife who finds
you've left your dirty underpants on the bathroom floor again, I read
about this online and some people suggested it was an unshielded HDMI
cable, to correct it myself I put my cameras audio into manual mode and
lowered the sensitivity level until the whining stopped, be aware of this
because it was so loud I thought it was going to damage the monitor.<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">the supplied
hotshoe ballhead out of the box felt really good and solid but in reality
when used it was cheap and flimsy, no matter how much I tightened
everything it kept wobbling and wouldn't stay in position, in fact I'm not
sure I even trust it to hold the monitor properly so I ordered a friction
arm to attach the monitor to a light stand or the camera tripod.<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">So only a couple of minor niggles but the positives far outweigh the
negatives.<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">The Feelworld monitor comes in a variety of packages including ones that
come with batteries and chargers, I already have batteries so opted for the dc
plug so I can plug it directly into the mains power supply when at home.<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Another great feature is it takes batteries and electricity, it uses the
Sony NP batteries which are universal for lots of products including cameras
and lighting. <span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">The monitor also comes with a very cool lightweight sunshade for using
outside, once you've attached the bracket the sunshade is attached using Velcro
which is already part of the sunshade, you can take it on and off within a
second or two and it folds flat.<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">
So far it looks like a super cool product and based on initial thoughts I can
recommend this unit.

Whilst I build up my own confidence making YouTube videos and trying different things I'm practising explaining photographic subjects such as Depth Of Field.
Depth Of Filed is something that may look simple but it really isnt that easy to do unless you have the know how and the equipment to do it.
With the advances of technology and how accessible DSLR's are becoming to the average user, these togs have all this technology at their fingertips but not always the understanding of how it actually works, a lot of newbies coming into photography may just stick their DSLR into auto mode and fire away not knowing the power they have at their disposal.
One purpose of my video is to inform new togs to jump into aperture priority and use the aperture to increase or decrease depth of field or to explain it differently what is in focus or out of focus between two points in a picture or scene.
With this new found knowledge photographers can start to unleash their creativity and have fun at the same time so I really hope this reaches as many togs as possible.

My YouTube channel is picking up pace but I am still building up confidence so may still have that deer in the headlights look with a few umms and erms thrown in and also a few repetitive sentences, I'm still a newbie when it comes to video editing as well but the more I do the more I improve, fine tuning as I go.
I will plug away until I get a routine which is smooth and natural so make sure you subscribe and follow me on my journey from newbie to a video master.

As part of my YouTube channel experience I wanted to cover multiple areas of Photography including photo processing.
This way I can make more and varied content to keep it fresh, engaging and fun.
First thing was to find some software to record my photo editing, cheaper the better and free a God send, what do you know God was listening.
I found this fantastic free open source software called Open Broadcaster Software, OBS for short or OBS studio for everything in-between.

Here is a link to the website and software for you guys to check out for yourself https://obsproject.com/

For free software this is an amazing piece of kit, enabling me to record exactly what's going on on my computer screen in real time, the video I will post below is the first time video Ive made using this software and I am very pleased so far so watch this space for my content using OBS studio.

The video I recorded below is of me processing some shots I took of a basketball shoot I did a little while ago, I needed to combine multiple images using masks to get the final results I had in mind.
The video shows the shots I choose in Adobe Bridge which I then get into Photoshop and stack on top of each other making it easy to add masks for the blending process.
Masks are such a powerful tool once mastered, making it super easy to delete things from an image to show what's on the image above or below, this is normally the technique used for making people or things float, this is done by taking a picture of a background, then taking another picture with someone standing on a chair, then using masks erasing the chair from the top image which then shows just the background from the bottom image, hence the illusion of someone floating.
This technique is sued for an array of subjects only limited by your creativity and ideas.
For my video I used this process to make me jump super high and dunk a basketball, something that would be pretty much impossible for me to do in real life due to age and weight restrictions lol.
Anyway check out my video below and see for yourself how I used masks to blend images.
Not only are you throwing yourself out there for the world to see, you are self conscious about how you look, how you sound and how you act.
You may worry about if your camera gear is good enough, whether you are lit properly or whether your audio equipment is up to the job.
Believe me I have worried about all these issues and more, these issues and worries can stop you giving it a try and doing something you may enjoy doing.
I decided 'Sod It' and just ploughed ahead, doing some silly and crazy things in my videos and just thought have fun with it.
With each video my confidence is growing and now I want to make more videos and post more and the issues and worries I mentioned earlier are starting to dwindle.

As you can see from my picture above I have now made a YouTube intro which will be a pinned post on my YouTube channel so new visitors and subscribers can just have a little insights into what to expect from me and my channel.
I tried to be a little bit different and film it outside in the Sussex countryside, I drove around with my wife looking for suitable locations that was away from a busy road, after 30 minutes of driving about we found this luscious green forest.
Making this intro wasn't without it's problems.
The weather was raining really heavy so we sat in the car and waited, after about 15 minutes we had a window of sun so I quickly set up my table and chair and camera gear.
The main problem was the sun was going in and out of the clouds so one minute the exposure was too dark and the next I was overexposed, so when editing the video together some scenes where unusable making the editing a challenge itself.
So I learnt the issues of filming outside, another learning curve by getting out there and giving it a go.

I didn't write down my dialogue so just ad-libbed it which created its own problems and also I didn't put in the video some things I wanted to say, so I learnt to make sure you write something down to work from.
I wanted to get the message across that you don't have to be a professional to get professional results and you don't need the latest and best gear, I wanted people to know amateurs like myself can get amazing results by just being creative and having fun and using what you've got.

Anyway here is my Intro video below, let me know what you think and if you like it please share with family and friends, which will be greatly appreciated.

Basketball on Fire

As you can see from the picture above it came out really well and the basketball is really on fire and yes I'm really holding it, cool isn't it.
Anyway the picture above and how I did it will be a blog post for another day, for this post I wanted to share what the photoshoot I did next.
I basically wanted to photograph a basketball player on a basketball court doing amazing jumps.
As I don't know any basketball players once again I had to be my own guinea pig, hoorah.
I went to sports direct and bought a basketball outfit, well I thought it was a basketball outfit but my son told me it was a boxing outfit, oh well it looked the part in the pictures which you will see in my video soon.
I paid less than £10 for the outfit and the basketball cost me £5 so £15 all in to put this photoshoot together, pretty damned cheap if I say so myself.
I scouted around my local area for suitable basketball courts and found a couple nearby.
The next morning I put on my basketball get up, packed my camera gear and took my wife to the court.
As the pictures were of me my wife was pressing the shutter button for me to grab the shots.
The photoshoot was done on a Nikon D750 and Tamron 15-30 and for lighting I used a single Yongnuo 560IV flashgun with my Pixapro 40" collapsible beauty dish, this was triggered using a Yongnuo 560tx which was placed on the cameras hotshoe.
I also took along a small step ladder for me to jump off because if you have been up close and personal with a basketball hoop you will be surprised how high the hoop actually is, these guys who slam dunk the ball can jump super high.
I needed the ladder to get close to the hoop, being middle aged and unfit so I just too a picture of the court with no step ladder then combined the images to delete the ladder.
Anyway below I made a video of the photoshoot showing the gear and how I jumped off the ladder with some pictures as well so stay around and check out the video as well.

I hope you enjoyed the video, I wanted to show what can be done with some cheap props and by an amateur photographer so if I can do it you can to.

Make sure you check out my links and give me a follow as well, its all free so no excuses and feel free to leave a comment or ask questions about my video or my photography.
One of my first videos around 3-4 years ago was a what's in my camera bag and was quite popular, you are obviously a nosey bunch lol, anyway to date its almost 11,000 views and for a first video this has blown me away and inspired me to do my next one.
Even though I still have some of the original equipment from the first video I also have loads of new additions including a brand new bag a Thinktank Airport International V2 and I love this bag so much I wanted to show you what I keep in it and how much it holds, make sure you watch this video to the end as I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

I did the video for various reasons.

One was I want to do more YouTube videos, I want to make more content and improve the quality of my videos and one way was by enhancing the audio.

Another reason was my video was a great way to test the Tascam dr-05 and compare the audio difference to my Nikon D750 onboard microphone.

I haven't done many videos and am still finding my way but when you watch my video and listen to the two audio outputs you will be pleasantly surprised, I feel this has already made massive improvements to the video.
My squarespace website has finally come to an end after only one year so I wanted to make a post of what I thought was good and bad and why I let it expire.

As an amateur photographer I wanted to share my work with the world and what better way than having your own website with a personal domain name, doing it right with a high end glossy feel can make even a mere amateur look like a seasoned professional.

I have tried a couple of methods, the first was a basic template site called clikpic which was a great entry level website creator, but unfortunately it didn't have the high end glossy feel and the variety of templates that I wanted, this was a few years ago and clikpic may have changed since then and upped their game.

I then tried WordPress which was the next big thing when starting your own website, you had massive control over your design and options with an endless number of templates to choose from.

To be honest WordPress caused me nothing but stress and headaches.

If I remember rightly you had to rent a server from your chosen company to host your WordPress website, this wasn't expensive and once paid for you just downloaded the WordPress software to your server and you was basically up and running, well you would think so wouldn't you, but no me personally I didn't find it that straightforward.

You had to download your template which could be a free version or paid version, I tried both but had problems with both.

I struggled setting up the site spending hours and hours trying to sort it out constantly getting errors or conflicts, uploading pictures was a nightmare especially if you got the picture dimensions wrong.

In the end I gave up and I am quite capable with computers, once again this was a couple of years ago and things may have progressed to make starting smoother and easier.

One word of warning which I suffered was I paid for and downloaded some WordPress templates and without realising I was subscribed yearly to them, they drew money from my account for a couple of years, I had to track down the website I downloaded the template from and cancel the subscription.

The subscription was to keep the template updated and to give access to their forums and support.

It wasn't a lot of money but it still stung a bit like I had been defrauded, so be very careful and read the small print even downloading a paid for template.

Squarespace website

I finally started up a website again, so what made me do this and what made me choose Squarespace.

Well Squarespace is very clever with their advertising, they basically sponsor any high profile YouTube photographer who in turn blurts out nothing but praise for Squarespace and in turn offers a 10% discount on the first year using a special code linked to that YouTuber.
I decided to take the plunge after watching Karl Taylor's YouTube channel, to take advantage of the discount.
Squarespace is a template site which has a limited amount of templates but they feel very high end and had that glossy professional feel I was after, also they gave me a free domain name for the first year which on top of the discount was pretty damn cool.
The website was easy to set up, looked great and there was loads of online help from various sources if you got stuck, even the Youtubers who promoted Squarespace made some videos on how to get started.
So I was up and running in no time with a high end site that made me a photography enthusiast have the look of a professional photographer, for this I highly recommend Squarespace.

The only problem I had with Squarespace was with their twitter feed, I tweeted Squarespace and asked them to retweet my Squarespace website with my website address link in the tweet.
I had to tweet Squarespace quite a few times with this request but they ignored every request until other people jumped into the tweet timeline to prompt Squarespace.
Squarespace basically said they don't retweet these types of requests, now this infuriated me on a couple of parts.

Why not just tell me this the first time I made the request as I would have understood, ignoring my request just made me angry and lose confidence in Squarespace customer support.

Squarespace do retweet customers websites, but most of the time only famous people, so as a paying customer Squarespace made me feel unimportant.

As a paying customer why not retweet your customers website, surely this is great advertising for both parties by supporting your customer base and having confidence in your product.

Anyway that's just a quick rundown of a bad experience I had with Squarespace, now that whinge has been aired I shall move onto why I let my website expire.

Even though my Squarespace website offered pretty much everything I needed, I didn't really gain anything from it that I didn't get from a free social media site such as Flickr or 500px ,all I was doing was showing off my images.
Me personally I didn't know what I wanted to to do with my website, did I want to sell pictures, did I want to advertise myself for hire etc.
As a family man with a full time job I find it hard to commit time to something apart from actually getting out and taking pictures when I can, plus I didn't know what direction to take my photography in so my website was just left sitting in cyberspace as a gallery that people could visit.
So with this in mind did I want to renew my website and hand over money for something I didn't actually get anything back for, I decided no not really, especially as the renewal price increased and then I would have to pay for the domain name on top.
On the basis of everything I've said I let my Squarespace expire for now and spent the money elsewhere.
If you have a game plan or a goal in mind and you need a website to achieve that goal then apart from the customer service not being up to scratch sometimes I would say the product itself is pretty damn good and you wont go far wrong for a good looking easy to build website.

Me personally, when I decide what my goals and game plan are I may renew my website but until then you can visit me on all my social media linked below.
I ordered myself a new 40 inch silver collapsible beauty dish from Pixapro which sat in its box for 2 weeks due me having a summer flu, the flu in summer wtf is that all about.

My wife tells me its called Man Flu, either way its crap.

Normally I get super excited and am already unboxing something whilst the postman is handing it to me so to leave something in its wrapper for 2 weeks made my man flu all the more worse.

As soon as I was well enough me and my daughter shared the celebratory unboxing with you via the magic of YouTube.

Making YouTube videos is still a massive learning curve so the audio is a bit dodgy which I apologise for, the microphone was on the floor in front of us but in my haste to break out this dome of silvery goodness I placed the box and bag on top of the microphone creating the audio mishap, lesson learned for next time.

Me and my daughter acted a little bit silly at the beginning to make it fun so we was also a little embarrassed, I was in two minds whether to post the video but thought wtf you only live once.

Anyway we hope you enjoy our unboxing video and hope it helps in some way

and dont forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel were we will be doing shoot to see how the beauty dish performs

My daughter took up kickboxing a few months ago, and being a proactive photographer I saw an opportunity for some kickass shots, excuse the pun lol.
After getting to know the instructors a little better I asked Sam Davies the chief instructor and founder of Titan Kickboxing if he would allow me to come along to his Dojo and take some pictures of the fighters.
I was a little nervous and apprehensive about asking but Sam made me feel very welcome and to be honest I was a little shocked how approachable the instructors were.
Perhaps I watched too many kung-fu movies as a kid as I had this vision of being beaten up just by looking at a blackbelt lol, (Drunken Master springs to mind).
Anyway my apprehensions were unfounded and so far I have been allowed into the Dojo twice with my camera gear with an invite to come back again.

Normally I like to take my time and capture posed shots but I was allowed to to capture the fighters exercising and sparring during a lesson so there was a various range of skills and belts.
This was not only fun but a big learning curve for me as normally I would only grab a handful of posed shots but I knew I had to take loads of pictures to try and capture some good shots of the high impact and fast paced lesson.

To get a fast enough shutter speed I had to do something outside of my comfort zone, I had to up my ISO to areas Ive never ventured into before, most of the time my camera is firmly fixed to ISO 100-400 but today I was going into ISO 5000, combined with my f/2.8 lenses I could start getting a shutter speed of around 1/200 sec to 1/400 sec.
I worked in manual and as the light levels never changed I dialed in the settings I need to get a ball park exposure and just concentrated on focusing and grabbing the shots.

With the high ISO's the shots where very grainy especially as my Nikon D7100 a cropped sensor camera was pushed to its limits at this range, but converting them to black and white not only suited this genre of photography it helped by using the grain to give a more gritty feel.

On both occasions I photographed the Kickboxing I took hundreds of pictures, this was alien to me as I like a more patient and methodical approach firing off a few shots here and there, even though this was new territory for me I absolutely loved the high octane situation of trying to capture a fleeting moment when a glove or foot made contact with the opponent, I can only imagine what the adrenaline must be like at a big fight where the fighters are going at it hammer and nail and trying to capture that split second shot for a title.

After the lesson on my first visit I wanted to do what I do best the posed shots with off camera flash, unfortunately, there wasn't any time to do this at the end, I was a bit gutted especially as I carried in loads of gear from my car, still I had learned loads and got lots of awesome shots, this would have to wait until next time.

Next time came and once again I took loads of shots of the fighters sparring, using high ISO's, wide apertures and swapping lenses between ultra wide and zoomed.
This time I managed to grab some individual time with the fighters to pose for me, time was limited as another class would be starting soon, so I had 30 minutes to set up my gear, take the shots and pack away, bring it on :-)
For these I used off camera flash with a beauty dish as my main light, I had 2 lights either side with reflector dishes and honeycomb grids but to be honest I was struggling to place the rim lights with the limited time I had.

My lighting consisted of three Yongnuo 560 IV flashguns which were fired using a Yongnuo 560TX trigger, the great thing about this combination was I can alter the power of each individual flashgun from the trigger on camera.

If you've ever visited my Flickr or 500px you will see that my photography is varied, taking pictures of most subjects, but deep down I particularly love portraits and strobist work.
I had 9 days off work so decided to do some portraits of my 10 year old daughter who was bribed with copious amounts of ice cream and Reece cups.
So with the magic of sugary products I had my model, next was the creativeness of the portraits wanting to make the shoot fun I headed over to Amazon, not the jungle but the store to order some props.
I ordered some sunglasses and also a pair of funky steam punk glasses, also my wife who loves supporting me with my creativeness bought us some fun glasses from the pound shop, so altogether we spent around £16 on the props.
Below I will explain my set ups for some of my shots with diagrams to show what is possible in your own home as all these shots were taken in my front room, the only thing I changed between shots was the lighting and glasses.

My gear used
Nikon D7100
Sigma 70-200 f/2.8
Folding white/black Background
Yongnuo 560tx trigger
3 x Yongnuo 560 IV
1 x Yongnuo 560 III
Beauty Dish (silver)
Small Softbox
2 x Reflector Dish
Coloured Gels

I started off with a white background to get some shots in the bag by setting up a Yongnuo 560 IV either side of the background both had reflector dishes to stop spill onto my subject, I took test shots changing the power until the background was a nice bright white by checking the LCD on the back of my camera and using an aperture of around f/9 to f/11 which was just a personal choice to get as much dof as possible using a longer lens.
Next I set up my beauty dish and softbox with the beauty dish directly in front of my daughter and slightly above camera level and the softbox directly in front but below camera level.
The softbox was to fill in the shadows, I normally use a reflector for this but on this occasion wanted complete control over the shadows by alternating the power.
I think this type of lighting is called Clamshell lighting.
Using my Yongnuo 560tx trigger I turned off the background lights then set up the power of the beauty dish and softbox individually to see what affect they had.
Once each individual light was sorted I turned them all on then took test shots of my daughter to finalize the lighting.
The reason you do this is that the key lights can add more light to your backdrop and can then make it too bright, so if you work in a small space and your subject is close to the back drop the light can reflect onto the back of your subject creating some funny results or unwanted rim light.

For the coloured backdrops I just put coloured gels over the two rear flashguns.
I used blue gels and green gels then changed the colour in Photoshop if I needed any other colours.
Next I turned my white background round to use the black for the next shots.
All my lights stayed in the same positions all I did was turn background lights round to point at the side of my daughter to create something a little different.

I just wanted to show what is possible in a small space with basic manual flashguns and some really cheap props.

Apart from the single light on the backdrop all the pictures were taken with everything in the same position with some minor power setting changes between coloured backdrops and the changing from white to black.

With coloured backdrops if you can only change the backdrop to one colour you can then change this to any colour you want in Photoshop, also I added the lipstick in Photoshop as well which you can change the colour in Photoshop also.

Anyway have fun with your portraits and don't be afraid to try different things, its amazing what you can capture by being creative and mixing it up a bit.
